{Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench}

Jazz is just so much cooler in black and white and so is Damien Chazelle's romantic musical dramedy Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.
The film is about Guy (actual trumpeting phenom Jason Palmer) and his girlfriend Madeline (Desiree Garcia) who waits tables and waits for her break as a jazz singer. We see the two finish a decidedly awkward conversation on a park bench and soon both are on the rebound.
The film kind of reminds me of John Cassavetes' Beat generation improvisation inspired film Shadows. On a side note: The Hold Steady's 2008 album Stay Positive makes various allusions to Cassavetes' film Opening Night. Also, Pedro Almodovar repeats the film's accident scene in his All About My Mother as the epicenter of the dramatic conflict.
Look for the film in select theaters November 5th.
