{Drums of Death}

Drums-Of-Death-Generation-Hexed--300x300.jpg

Generation Hexed promises 'rave horns and love songs, ranging from blistering acid house to instrumental space hop to piano power ballads and everything in between'. "this is pop music on my terms", states Drums of Death (aka colin bailey), who has collaborated with Peaches and releasing dance floor singles for the Hot Chip associated greco-roman label.

One listen to this song and I was having some serious rave flashbacks...

{Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench}

Guy and Madeline Park Bench Poster.jpg

Jazz is just so much cooler in black and white and so is Damien Chazelle's romantic musical dramedy Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.

The film is about Guy (actual trumpeting phenom Jason Palmer) and his girlfriend Madeline (Desiree Garcia) who waits tables and waits for her break as a jazz singer. We see the two finish a decidedly awkward conversation on a park bench and soon both are on the rebound.

The film kind of reminds me of John Cassavetes' Beat generation improvisation inspired film Shadows. On a side note: The Hold Steady's 2008 album Stay Positive makes various allusions to Cassavetes' film Opening Night. Also, Pedro Almodovar repeats the film's accident scene in his All About My Mother as the epicenter of the dramatic conflict.

Look for the film in select theaters November 5th.

I haven't really fallen for The Bees (or Band of Bees) new album Every Step's a Yes just yet, but I have found myself repeating the first track off the album over and over again.

The psychedelic instrumentation is tight. Electric sitar, recorders, dulcimer, Latin percussion, reggae horns add to the songs' core structures of organ and acoustic guitar. I recently got this viral video for Jeremy Messersmith's Star Wars-themed song "Tatooine"...

Previously mentioned...

The Reluctant Graveyard is the final chapter of what Messersmith calls his "life-cycle trilogy". The series began with his debut The Alcatraz Kid (dealing with the difficulties of coming of age and finding an identity as a young adult), Silver City (concentrating on married life), and now The Reluctant Graveyard which tackles end-of-life issues and the inhabitants of a local historic cemetery. I know sounds a bit morbid, but it's influenced by 60's styled pop (ala The Zombies, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Monkees, The Beatles).
