{Jeremy Messersmith}

4055476248-1.jpg

I previously called Messersmith's latest album pure pop perfection! Well, now he's taking his new songs out on the road!

Jeremy will make it out to the west coast and the North American tour includes dates with Frightened Rabbit, KaiserCartel and Telekinesis.

The album is the final chapter of what Messersmith calls his "life-cycle trilogy". The series began with his debut The Alcatraz Kid (dealing with the difficulties of coming of age and finding an identity as a young adult), Silver City (concentrating on married life), and now The Reluctant Graveyard which tackles end-of-life issues and the inhabitants of a local historic cemetery. I know sounds a bit morbid, but it's influenced by 60's styled pop (ala The Zombies, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Monkees, The Beatles).

Here's a couple of my favs (the first reminding me so much of Elliott Smith's vocal delivery)...

"Toussaint Grey First In Life And Death"

"Knots"

All Birds Say (ATO Records) is an intimate collection of musings on life from My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel.

Deft in its presentation, the songs on the album unfold in a dream-like stream of consciousness with lush and elegant arrangements. Broemel’s modern-folk delivery might attract fans of Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Neal Casal, Andrew Bird, Mose Allison, and early Boz Scaggs.

{The American}

theamericanposter_187x228_final.jpg

The trailer for The American looks intriguing. I like that it hardly utilizes Clooney as the main draw, instead focusing on story, character and the complexities surrounding him. Director Anton Corbijn, an acclaimed music video director of videos (from Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, Nirvana, Nick Cave and more) looks to be creating a kind of foreign film in its tone and look.

The story focuses on a loner assassin who is a master of his craft. But when a job in Sweden goes awry, he vows his next target will be his last. Of course, nothing is ever that simple, or it wouldn’t be a movie.

Look for The American in select theaters September 1st.

Now, with the release of Renmin Park, Cowboy Junkies are beginning their most ambitious period yet.
