{Uncle Boonmee}

UNCLE_BOONMEE-Photo1.jpg

The Thai film (from Apichatpong Weerasethakul) Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the coveted Golden Palm at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival.

The story revolves around Uncle Boonmee (Thanapat Salsaymar), who is suffering from acute liver failure and has decided to spend his last days in the Thai countryside, surrounded by his loved ones. To his surprise, he is visited by the ghost of his dead wife (Natthakarn Aphaiwonk) and also his long lost son, who returns home in a non-human form – that of a man-sized hairy animal with blazing red eyes.

Sounds a little strange, but I can't imagine this film winning top honors at Cannes without being a superb film. There is no US release date just yet, but I'm sure a date will be announced shortly.

A few weeks back I got a screeners copy (along with a huge stack of production notes) for Holy Rollers and I accidentally buried it under a pile of magazines, only to be found over the weekend. Thank god I did, I highly recommend this one!

Holy Rollers is inspired by actual events in the late nineties when Hasidic Jews were recruited as mules to smuggle ecstasy from Europe into the United States. Sam Gold (Jesse Eisenberg), a young Hasid from an Orthodox Brooklyn community reluctantly follows the path his family has chosen for him, awaiting a pending arranged marriage and studying to become a Rabbi, when a neighbor approaches him about a job.

The film stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Bartha, Ari Graynor, Danny A. Abeckaser, Q-Tip, Elizabeth Marvel, and Jason Fuchs. Holy Rollers is now playing in select theaters.

{Nightshifters}

04 Nightshifters.jpg

Fader wrote-
'Momma’s Boy and Mixik the Cat are actually the same person—producer Mike Gnacadja—so the concept of one man doing a song versus himself might sound weird at first. But from moniker to moniker, he creates two separate and distinct styles of music: Momma’s Boy is his spry techno-leaning alter, as his bubbly tracks on the Sound Pellegrino and Anabatic labels can attest, while Mixik the Cat takes a slightly darker slant, aiming towards 4AM low-end rattlers for releases with darkhearted heroes Trouble & Bass. So in lieu of having a constant internal soundclash, on his new EP, At Night, he attempts to integrate his brainwaves, uniting his musical personalities into one whole unit. Said unit is still somewhat insane and includes handclaps, bass throb, a couple parts that sound like a fireman’s hose, a demonic vocal sample and twitchy knobs, however, so we’re gonna posit that if Gnacadja ever goes full Sybil on us, dancefloors worldwide will actually explode.'

Another of my favorite films I took in during The Newport Beach Film Festival was the Canadian film written and directed by Ryan Ward called Son of the Sunshine. Son of the Sunshine is a somber film follows the life of Sonny Johnns, who has been diagnosed with tourette’s Syndrome, and chronicles his life as he undergoes a life-altering surgery that will open the doors to the “normal life” he has always dreamed of. The film revolves around the idea of identity and the idea of discovering who we really are.

{Dark Horse}

DH1.tiff

During last weeks Newport Beach Film Festival I had a chance to take in a whole lotta full length features, short films, and documnetaries.

The Australian film Dark Horse was my absolute favorite short film of the dozen or so screenings that I attended. Clocking In under the thirty minute mark this film was poignant, beautiful and all together captivating.

The story follows Minh Tran, a lonely taxi driver whose relationship with his wife has disintegrated following a miscarriage. One night his path crosses that of Isabella Fortino, a girl forced into prostitution by her boyfriend. Minh’s show of kindness to Isabella leads to an unlikely connection as they lose themselves in each other’s company and leave their troubled lives behind.

Dark Horse has been selected for screening at various film festivals including international events hosted by India, Thailand, Ireland, South Africa, Egypt and the U.S. It won the Best Short Film award at the Byron Bay International Film Festival.

I had a chance to speak with producer Simon Ritch, who told me that he and director Marc Furmie are currently working on a full length feature. When I hear more on that, so will you!

{180 South}

poster-xlarge.jpg

The Newport Beach Film Festival is currently going on. I have screened many films and I will be mentioning some of the films that I have seen over the past few days.

180 South is a great documentary that follows adventurer Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia.

180 South is currently playing in select theaters.

{Trashcan Sinatras}

After two decades worth of critically-acclaimed releases on both sides of the Atlantic, Scottish band the Trashcan Sinatras will release In the Music on April 27th.

This U.S. version of the album features the ten new studio recordings, as well as eight previously unavailable live bonus acoustic tracks. I recently received the album and was told only to post the first single "People". The song is good, but in my opinion not the best the album has to offer.

Here's a fan made video for my absolute fav track off the album "Should I Pray" (featuring Carly Simon)...
