{Nada Surf}

Nada Surf announce they will release their forthcoming covers album If I Had A Hi-Fi on CD/LP and digitally June 8th via the bands own label, Mardev Records, with distribution through ADA. To give fans a preview of the new album Nada Surf are made their take on Bill Fox's "Electrocution" available for free download.

If I Had A Hi-Fi is full of inspired, unexpected choices: from avant-pop Kate Bush to underground power-pop classicist Dwight Twilley. There are some intriguingly obscure numbers, like Spanish band Mercromina's "Evolution" and under-documented Bill Fox's "Electrocution." The as yet little known Fox, of Cleveland cult band The Mice, inspired local groups like Guided by Voices and Death of Samantha. Doug Gillard, who was in both of them, lends his highly evolved guitar skills to "Electrocution" as well as the Twilley and Go-Betweens songs.

{Preservation Hall Band}

Preservation cover WEBfrank_relle.jpg

In honor of Mardi Gras I thought I'd show New Orleans a little love and what better a way than to spread the word about Preservation: An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall & The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program!

Although New Orleans' traditional jazz scene had many top players in the 1950s, there was no one center for the city's veteran greats to play. In 1961, local art dealer Larry Borenstein opened a building in the French Quarter called Preservation Hall. The young tuba player Allan Jaffe ran the hall and organized tours for the musicians who often performed there, naming the band after the venue and the rest, as they say, is history.

Playing with the Preservation Hall Band on this benefit album are: Louis Armstrong, Andrew Bird, Terence Blanchard, Pete Seeger, Dr. John, Blind Boys of Alabama, Brandi Carlile, Cory Chisel, Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle, Merle Haggard, Richie Havens, Jason Isbell, Jim James, Angelique Kidjo, Amy LaVere, Anita Briem, Del McCoury, Buddy Miller, Paolo Nutini, and Tom Waits.

This is a repost from last week, in case you missed it. Just dedicate "Lucky Clover Coin" to your lover and all will be well.

I recently got an advance copy of Seattle musician Rocky Votolato's forthcoming album True Devotion (out February 23rd on Barsuk Records). I really like the first half of this album. The first track in particular, which is a ballad with this wonderful line at the end of the song where he sings "I only wanna walk the way you showed me". It might not sound like anything special, but in the context of the song it's subtle greatness.

Anyone who pre-orders the record before the release date will get immediate exclusive digital access to the album plus a bonus 7" single with two non-album tracks (while supplies last). The bonus 7″ single includes the two non-album tracks “Rushing To The Ending” (with James Bowman of Against Me! on guitar) and “Connections”, both featuring label-mate David Bazan on drums. {Daptone Gold}

Daptone Gold is a collection of hits, obscurities, and unheard exclusives from the Daptone Records catalog. With a library of albums and 45’s spanning from rhythm and blues, afrobeat, gospel, or funk, Daptone has established a sound that is consistently sincere, heavy, and soulful.

As Gabriel Roth (Daptone Records co-owner, engineer and bass player for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings) sees it, “Over the past decade, a lot of blood and sweat was shed in this little house in Bushwick, and when people experience all these recordings together in a package like this, they are really going to feel what the “Daptone Sound” is all about.” Roth continues, “I’m very proud of this record. It’s hard evidence of what the Daptone family has accomplished. I’m also excited to finally have so many of my favorite Daptone cuts, many of which were previously only available on vinyl seven inches, included on a proper album. People should really hear this.”

The sampler features some of the most popular songs such as Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ “How Long Do I Have To Wait” and Antibalas Afro Beat's “Che Che Cole” (both regulars on mixes I often make), alongside some deeper selections such as Lee Fields’ “Could Have Been” and Charles Bradley’s “The World (Is Going Up In Flames)”, which have previously only been released as 45 rpm singles.
