{Norah Jones}

nj-the-fall-lg.jpg

I'm actually looking forward to Norah Jones forthcoming album The Fall, out Nov. 17th via Blue Note.

I must admit that it's in part to the fact that The Fall was produced by Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon), features a brand new band, and songwriting collaborations with Ryan Adams, Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, and Jesse Harris.

Have a listen to the first single...

Also have a listen to a live performance of "Tell Yer Mama" (another new tune from the forthcoming album) courtesy of Amazon

Here's the new video (btw she's looking especially cute these days) for "Chasing Pirates" ...

{The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day}

boondock_saints_ii_all_saints_day.jpg

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is an upcoming sequel to the 1999 cult classic The Boondock Saints. Director Troy Duffy returns to film the sequel, which sees the return of Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as Irish brothers who act as vigilantes.

The story begins with the two brothers deep hiding in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former lives or modern technologies. When word comes that a priest has been killed by sinister forces in the tough underworld of Boston (the Yakavetta Crime Family), they return to mount a bloody crusade to bring justice to those who must now suffer the consequences, with a new partner in crime (Clifton Collins, Jr.) aiding them and FBI Agent Paul Smecker's protege (Julie Benz) in pursuit of them.

The film opens in select theaters this weekend (October 30th).

{R.E.M.}

rem2.jpg

Tomorrow R.E.M. will release a brand-new double live album, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympian via Warner Bros. Records. The two-CD set features 39 songs that capture the best moments from the band’s 2007 “working rehearsals” at Dublin’s fabled Olympia club where singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills tested out new songs for R.E.M.’s 2008 studio album Accelerate.

The material was tested over five nights before capacity crowds comprised of fan-club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were privy to R.E.M.'s so-called “experiment in terror,” as guitarist Peter Buck puts it. “We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," Buck says, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good — there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."

The double album comes with the documentary This Is Not a Show, which contains footage from the series of performances.

{Thao Nguyen With The Get Down Stay Down}

thao-know-better-learn-faster-aa.jpg

I'm really digging Thao Nguyen's new album Know Better Learn Faster!

For this album Thao brought some friends along: Andrew Bird plays violin on some tracks, Laura Viers sang some backup, and members of The Decemberists and Blitzen Trapper lent some support on additional instruments.

The album is chalk full of break-up songs, apparently inspired by a real life split.

Fear of Night is the debut album from UK Southend duo Relation. The stylish Fear of Night combines elements of classic 80s electro pop with crisp modern production.

Here's a couple of quotes...
"Like a deadpan Talk Talk with chord sequences by Johnny Marr" - Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl)

"Fear Of Night" and 'Lowest Common Denominator' shows a love of classic deadpan Pet Shop Boys / Electronic too...this is impressive stuff indeed." - Mixma

{Frightened Rabbit}

FatCat Records sent over a brand new Frightened Rabbit single ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ (official release November 16th) from the band’s forthcoming and as yet untitled album last week! Now here's the video too!

About the song:
'Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ was the title I had in my mind before I even started writing the album; I was becoming more and more interested in the idea of a rejection of the habits and behaviour most people see as normal, and in turn embracing a certain madness. It’s about losing your mind in order to reset the mind and the body. Forget what’s gone before and wash it out. This is not necessarily a geographical journey, as the ‘swim’ can involve any activity in which you can lose yourself. It’s a good introduction to the record as the theme unravels therein.”

I got an email about the forthcoming indie film Uncertainty, co-directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel and staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer), Lynn Collins (Wolverine), and Olivia Thirlby (Juno).

Uncertainty is about a young couple (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins), in love and facing a life-changing decision, find one seemingly ordinary July 4th cleaved in two by the flip of a coin on the Brooklyn Bridge. Look for Uncertainty in limited theaters and on VOD starting on November 13th.

Last week NPR premiered the excellent new song "These Roads Don't Move" and now that I've got my hands on the album, I will pass along the title track "One Fast Move or I'm Gone"! I got a new Mayer Hawthorne video and a new remix!

When you read about Mayer Hawthorne, you're likely to see phrases like "Motown influenced" or "retro soul", which is a bit odd from an artist off the hip-hop Stones Throw label.

His debut album, A Strange Arrangement (out October 6th), draws from the inspiration from Leroy Hutson, Smokey Robinson and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Holland, Dozier, Holland. The album is full of original (except the cover of The New Holidays 'Maybe So, Maybe No') sweet soul tunes!

{Tom Russell/Calexico}

tom_russell_blood_candle_ma.jpg

First off, I wanna redirect you towards this incredible essay by Tom Russell on the El Paso, TX/Juarez, Mexico border, the culture, the drug wars, his own travels, and what drew him to move there!

(Heads up, it's fascinating but in-depth and it runs about 8-9 pages.) The Rumpus is a cool site that's attracted some serious literary talent; Rick Moody has a regular column there.

Tom's piece is accompanied by his own paintings and it's riveting. It chronicles his own travels in that region, the bar where the margarita was inventing, the history of colonialism out there, and the current bloody struggles taking place. His writing style is interesting too; he's clearly read his share of Graham Greene, Kerouac, and Bukowski. (He's also writing a book of his correspondence w/ Bukowski.)

Also, Tom's new album Blood and Candle Smoke, recorded w/ members of Calexico, is out now.
