[Mayer Hawthorne}

When you read about Mayer Hawthorne, you're likely to see phrases like "Motown influenced" or "retro soul", which is a bit odd from an artist off the hip-hop Stones Throw label.

His debut album, A Strange Arrangement (out October 6th), draws from the inspiration from Leroy Hutson, Smokey Robinson and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Holland, Dozier, Holland. The album is full of original (except the cover of The New Holidays 'Maybe So, Maybe No') sweet soul tunes!

{Some Days are Better than Others}

From the producers of Wendy and Lucy, Paranoid Park, and Old Joy comes Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick's debut feature film Some Days are Better than Others!

Shot primarily in Portland and the surrounding areas, Some Days are Better than Others is a poetic, character-driven independent feature film starring: James Mercer, Carrie Brownstein, Renee Roman Nose, and David Wodehouse. A charmingly melancholy look at abandonment, Some Days are Better Than Others asks the question, “Why do the good times slip by so fast while the sad times seem so sticky?”

Some Days are Better Than Others is a quirky black comedy about the disposable relics of our always-consuming society. It’s a film about growing up, growing old, and holding on to hope while looking for second chances.

{Van Diemen's Land}

A new trailer for Jonathan Auf Der Heide's Van Diemen's Land has recently popped up online!

This Australian thriller is about cannibalism during the early 1800s...so this one may not be for the squeamish. The title pertains to an actual piece of Australian wilderness known as Van Diemen's Land, referring to the island of Tasmania.

Van Diemen's Land tells the true story of Alexander Pearce, Australia's most notorious convict. In 1822, Pearce and seven convicts escaped from Macquarie Harbour, a place of ultra banishment and punishment, only to find a world less forgiving… the Australian wilderness.

Lucero released a new video for the song "Darken My Door"!

Lucero’s sixth studio album and major label debut, 1372 Overton Park, is due October 6 on Universal Republic Records.

Produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and featuring horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power), the record marks a decided turn toward the Memphis soul sound that has long informed the band’s records from afar.

1372 Overton Park follows the band’s 2006 release, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, hailed by Pitchfork as “the best showcase for the band’s taut dynamic yet."

{John Woo's Red Cliff}

Oh how i love early John woo movies...and how i love Wǔxiá films (a broad genre of Chinese fiction that concerns itself with martial arts adventures set primarily in ancient China)!

Magnet has just debuted the official US poster for John Woo's Red Cliff, his two-part ancient Chinese epic!

For those unaware, Red Cliff is a two part ancient Chinese history war epic that Woo shot in 2007. It actually debuted theatrically in China last July, but oddly, no US distributor ever bought it. It went on to make the most money in Chinese box office history (roughly $44 million)!

This film is an adaptation of Guanzhong Luo's novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Lin Chi-ling and Zhao Wei.

Look for Red Cliff in select theaters on November 13th...or if you're like me and don't like waiting hit up the nearest Chinatown dvd retailer (which should have the proper subtitle/dvd region).

{The Mountain Goats}

The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle is coming out with a (sort of) Biblically themed album titled The Life of the World to Come on October 6th via 4ad Records.

The ninth track is titled "Matthew 25:21", and is a somber acoustic tune in which Darnielle sings of a friend battling chemotherapy, faulty brakes, and planes crashing. This is classic Mountain Goats that should please fans of his earlier work. The “People screaming when the engines quit/ I hope we’re all in crash position when we hit" line and the entire last verse make this (in my humble opinion) one of his best songs to date.

The album is described by Sally and producer Johan Agebjörn as "a bit more poppy and varied" than the debut, taking influences from genres like trance, cosmic disco, acid, ambient and jazz while still having 80's disco as its base, and definitely keeping the romantic feel of Disco Romance.
