{Niña Dioz}

There was an interesting article in the LA Times today (Read it Right Here) about Niña Dioz making her US debut at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin. They even call her Mexico's answer to M.I.A.

Well I don't know about all that, but she does show promise.

Clips of this Jennifer Lynch's (daughter of David Lynch) forthcoming film Surveillance popped up online awhile back, but now we get a full-length trailer!

The plot revolves around an FBI agent who tracks a serial killer with the help of three of his would-be victims - all of whom have wildly different stories to tell.

The thriller stars Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond and is set for a June 26th release. David Lynch is also credited as Executive Producer so I'm sure he gave his two cents with the some of the films haunting imagery.

{Peter Bjorn and John}

Peter Bjorn & John living thing artwork.jpg

I haven't really had time to fully absorb Peter, Bjorn & John's forthcoming album Living Thing yet (the album's set for a March 31st release), but I have had a chance to give it a once over and there are definitely a couple of tracks that I already like, which I will host below. Head over to the band's MySpace and listen to the album in it's entirety for yourself!

Here's the video for "Nothing To Worry About". Why can't I stop watching this??? I'm seeing hints of the late 80's Japanese rockabilly flick Mystery Train, the 70's cult classic The Warriors, and Michael Jackson's Thriller. Did I mention there's a whole lotta leather?

{Camera Obscura}

Camera Obscura make such catchy music. The band's forthcoming album My Maudlin Career (out April 20th) is the follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed 2006 album Let’s Get Out Of This Country.

Now, while I may not put My Maudlin Career head-to-head with Let's Get Out Of This Country, it's got enough going for it be on par with any of their other albums...which they've been making for ten years!

I was gonna host a couple of tracks, but I can see that the songs are already all over the glorious Hype Machine so I'll just go ahead and re-direct you to a few highlights...

{Away We Go}

This Sam Mendes film was written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida so I'm expecting this to be pretty good!

This film is about a couple who are expecting their first child and decide to travel around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family. The film stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph in the lead roles and I gotta admit it all looks a little Juno-like, but this is definitely a thirty-somethings coming of age story. Rounding out the cast are Jeff Daniels, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton, Allison Janney, Melanie Lynskey, Chris Messina, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider.

Look for Away We Go in select theaters June 5th.

{Amadou & Mariam}

I've been a fan of Amadou and Mariam even before the married couple from Bamako released their critically acclaimed (Manu Chao-produced) Dimanche à Bamako album in 2006 and am looking forward to hearing their forthcoming album Welcome To Mali.

One thing is certain they have become a world music act that it's safe for music fans of all genres to admit liking. The duo even had a number one hit in Germany with the official theme for the World Cup. The two blend Malian blues with Western pop and Welcome To Mali finds them getting even more experimental.

Damon Albarn (producer) touches appear on the opener "Sabali", in which he tweaks Amadou & Mariam's sound in exactly the right direction. Welcome to Mali officially comes out March 24th. They will be headlining a Spring tour and will be opening for Coldplay in July.

{Mysteries of Pittsburgh}

Mysteries of Pittsburgh is a coming-of-age tale based on the 1988 novel by Michael Chabon. This was Chabon's first novel, which he began writing when he was a twenty-one-year-old undergraduate at the University of Pittsburgh. The story revolves around alienated youth, while serving up some familiar details of sex, alcohol and drugs. The film adaptation stars Jon Foster, Sienna Miller, Peter Sarsgaard, Mena Suvari, and Nick Nolte

This film will includes three shorts from Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Human Nature), South Korean filmmaker Joon-ho Bong (The Host) and French director Leos Carax (Pola X)!

The trailer looks visually stunning, as you might expect from anything that uses the city of Tokyo as its backdrop. Tokyo! will release on March 6th in NY and March 20th in LA.

Here’s a rundown of each of the three stories...

“Interior Design” by Michel Gondry: the surreal fable of a young couple who moves to Tokyo in search of a future. While the boy’s ambition to be a movie maker is clear, the girl begins to drifts apart. Both of them will be drowned in the imensity until the girl, feeling alone, discovers something strange.

“Merde” by Leos Carax: a mysterious man spreads confusion on the streets of Tokyo through a succession of irrational and provocative acts. ” The Creature of the Sewers ” as the media have dubbed him, arouse passion or repulsion. He will be captured, judged and then…

“Shaking Tokyo” by Bong Joon-Ho: He is a hikikomori - like many others in Japan, he has withdrawn from all contact with the outside world. When the pizza delivery girl faints during an earthquake, the unthinkable happens - the man falls in love. Will he take the unimaginable step : leaving the dead security of his apartment for the streets of Tokyo?

{Chris Isaak}

Chris Isaak's new album Mr. Lucky (out tomorrow) is now streaming in it's entirety on his MySpace page!

I've always had a soft spot for Chris Isaak. He kinda reminds me of a modern day Roy Orbison...only funnier. Not to mention I loved him in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, an very briefly in Silence of the Lambs)!

He now has his own show on on Biography (not to be confused with his previous Showtime show), where he interviews artists and then has them perform (or performs with them). His guests on the show thus far include: Trisha Yearwood, Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens), and Glen Campbell.

"We Let Her Down" is the first single off Mr. Lucky...

I'm addicted to Thunderheist's naughty electro raps on their new self-titled debut album!

The Toronto/Montreal duo press release states: “Mashing up the minimalism of Detroit techno, the luxuriousness of Moroder-inspired disco and blaring, synth-heavy booty beats with their m.o. of "when you come to the show, someone's getting pregnant," Thunderheist more than deliver on the promise of the early demos that have been floating around the internet for months now.”

The lead single is the infectious "Sweet 16". The album also contains "Bubblegum" and "Jerk It", which have been floating around the web for awhile.

{Tokyo Sonata}

I got an email bout this Festival De Cannes Jury Prize winner about a seemingly ordinary Japanese Family.

Tokyo Sonata is a portrait of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family. A father who loses his job conceals the truth from his family; the eldest son in college hardly returns home; the youngest son furtively takes piano lessons without telling his parents; and the mother, who knows deep down that her role is to keep the family together, cannot find the will to do so.

Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s (no relation to Akira Kurosawa) the film is set to release in select theaters March 13th.
