{Smoking Popes}

Di you know that The Smoking Popes have reunited and their new album is out now!

Stay Down is the Chicago band’s first studio album in nine years...and it doesn't seem like a day has past. The new songs sound like classic Smoking Popes material. The opener, “Welcome to Janesville,” and the anthemic “Grab Your Heart and Run” to the tuneful ballads “If You Don’t Care” and “It’s Never Too Late (For Love).” The album even closes with a refreshing acoustic touch in the romantic pangs of “First Time.”

The band’s last studio album was The Party’s Over, a collection of covers, in 2003.

Here's a highlight...

{Noah and The Whale}

Get ready to say hello to your new favourite band!

This London quartet pen poetic pop songs in the vein of Belle and Sebastian or Acid House Kings and the group's new single "Five Years Time" surely one of the summer's most infectious tunes.

"Five Years Time" features a toe tapping melody punctuated by whistling, ukulele and some wispy backing vocals from Laura Marling, who just recently became a full-time band member. The band got their name from the film The Squid and the Whale (and also from the director’s name Noah Baumbach). Their debut album officially releases on August 11th, but in the meantime you can listen to a handful of tunes floating around the net.

{High on Stress}

Ok, enough movie posts already, let's get down to music!

I get alot of music in my inbox, unfortunetely I don't always have the time to get around to listening to it all. Every now and then however, I get some great new music that really I'm glad I checked out. High on Stress is one such band!

This Minneapolis quartet play melancholy country-tinged rock that might appeal to fans of Josh Rouse, Wilco, or The Replacements. Guitarist/singer Nick Leet finds that perfect balance of alt country with a pop, resulting in an album that stands up to repeated listens . I'm gonna post a couple of highlights from their latest album titled Moonlight Girls as well as a brand new song that is going to be on their forthcoming album, which is scheduled for a release towards the end of the summer.

Here's a couple of my fav tunes from Moonlight Girls...

"Gold Star"

"You Have Conversations with Jesus"

Here's a brand new track from their forthcoming album...

"Copy Light Parade"

You can hear more from High on Stress' MySpace (Be sure to listen to one of my other favs "No Such Thing As An Easy Break")

{Rain of Madness}

Paramount came up with a killer marketing tactic for the forthcoming comedy Tropic Thunder. They made a mockumentary titled Rain of Madness about the making of the film that completely mimics Hearts of Darkness, which is about the making of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

Tropic Thunder is directed by Ben Stiller (Zoolander) and written by Etan Cohen ("King of the Hill", Idiocracy) and actor Justin Theroux (who is also in the film). The movie stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, and Steve Coogan. Tropic Thunder arrives in theaters everywhere on August 15th.

I will be at San Diego's Comic Con later this week looking for more info on this one!

Filmmaker John Woo has been hired to direct the adaptation of the forthcoming graphic novel Caliber that will debut next week at Comic-Con.

The comic will be narrated by the series' Native American Merlin, named Jean Michel, the five-part Caliber revolves around a pistol called the Lawmaker that one man is destined to wield. The comic story sets King Arthur and his knights as 19th century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest.

Seeing as The Dark Knight may have changed the rules of adapting a comic book film, It will be interesting to see how Caliber will pan out.

The Postelles are a fresh faced New York City band that created a buzz with the pop-smart track "123 Stop" produced by The Strokes Albert Hammond Jr.

The Postelles Self-Titled EP dropped earlier this year, and finds influence in The Strokes, Billy Joel, and The Ramones. The quartet's debut full-length is scheduled to drop sometime this summer.

{Garden Party}

I was invited to attend the screening of the forthcoming indie film Garden Party this friday in Los Angeles.

The plot surrounds a 15-year-old girl (April) who is running from one bad situation into another, hoping to find an answer that doesn't involve taking off her clothes. As April navigates Los Angeles, she falls in with a group of confused kids struggling to chase their dreams. The black widow at the center of this web is a sexy, pot-dealing realtor named Sally St. Clair. Anyone who gets too close falls victim to her kinky entanglements. For some it goes bad, for others worse, but that's just a day in the life of the Garden Party - where everyone has a story.

Look for Garden Party in select theaters on July 11th.

I was also sent a zip file of a few tunes from the soundtrack from Erik Scott Smith (who plays aspiring musician Sammy in the film). 2 originals by Erik (“Hollywood” and “Victory Marks”) and a cover of a Rickie Nelson song (“Garden Party”). Copy the zip link here...

You Think You All Know Me: The Gary Wilson Story DVD+CD to release this week!

Championed by the likes of Beck and Matt Groening and obsessed over by record collectors, Gary Wilson's album, You Think You Really Know Me, is considered by some to be one of the most unique and personal musical statements of the 1970s.

Director Michael Wolk set out to learn more about the man behind the record, only to find that he had all but vanished shortly after it's original release. You Think You Really Know Me - The Gary Wilson Story is a look at the fascinating, yet bittersweet, life of a musician well ahead of his time and ripe for rediscovery.

Don't Knock The Rock's will be presenting Gary Wilson performing live following the screening of You Think You Really Know Me: The Gary Wilson Story w special guest Ariel Pink will take place Thursday night (July 10th) at The Silent Movie Theater (on Fairfax Ave) in L.A.

Originally I began scrolling my iPod to compile a list of some of my favorite albums this year. In doing so I found a great song ("Don't Fight It' from The Panics album Cruel Guards) that I had played on one of my Late Night Sounds mixes.

Unfortunetely (for me) the album never found it's way into my rotation, so I've been listening to it alot lately and I have quickly realized that this was one of The Best Albums of the Year...last year!

The Australian band's sound relies on infectious Brit-pop flavored melodies and catchy indie-rock. If you too missed hearing the album upon it's release (there was surprisingly very little coverage of the album), then don't hesitate to give Cruel Guards a listen.

Locking themselves in the studio to write and record an album in just four weeks, building on the success of “Happy Alone” (a standout track from Mentor Tormentor, which is currently featured in an extended run on a promo campaign for FX’s “The Riches”), Ariana contributed three songs to Hymn And Her, further showcasing her vocal and lyrical talents.
