{Grand Performances}

Grand Performances.tiff

Every year Grand performances offer a FREE show, this year it takes place during the day June 7th 2008 at Cal Plaza/Marina Pavillion in Downtown Los Angeles.

This year one of my favorite singer-songwriters David Garza will grace the stage (at 3:00pm) Garza first gained noteriety with his 1997 self-released 4-Track Manifesto EP. After refusing major label recording offers, choosing instead to record and distribute music on his own, he eventually signed with Lava/Atlantic to release his major label debut 1998's This Euphoria. As a live performer, Garza is regarded for passionate and charismatic performances, he continues to release his own music. He will also be playing the New Largo on La Cienega in Los Angeles on June 14th.

Also gracing the stage will be Ceci Bastida, whom some of you may know from her early days fronting Rock en Espanol’s progenitors Tijuana No!, or more recently as a member of alterna-pop icon Julieta Venegas' band. Bastida will showcase some of her own new solo material.

{Twilight Zone}

Generations of tv viewers have enoyed the creepy wonders of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone. Now a group of students at the Savannah College of Art and Design has re-imagined original Twilight Zone scripts as a series of eight graphic novels.

Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the cult phenomena comes the only graphic novel series based on the legendary show. The first two of eight graphic novels will be published this fall: "Walking Distance" and "The After Hours." These two classic Twilight Zone episodes from October 1959 and June 1960, respectively, are based on the original and unedited scripts in their entirety, written by Rod Serling. Artists from the SCAD sequential art department have taken on the challenge of creating this new dimension that will allow fans to make the journey from black and white videotape into the world of full-color images in a graphic novel.

{When You Are Engulfed in Flames}

When You Are Engulfed in Flames is a forthcoming collection of essays by David Sedaris, which is set to be released on June 3rd, 2008.

Sedaris's sixth essay collection assembles essays on trying to make coffee when the water is shut off, associations in the French countryside, buying drugs in a mobile home in rural North Carolina, having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger on a plane, armoring windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds, lancing a boil from his backside, and venturing to Tokyo in order to quit smoking, which features the memorable line: "I hated leaving a hole in the smoking world, and so I recruited someone to take my place."

Sedaris fans will be happy to hear about his breakneck tour for this book. Beginning on June 4th, Sedaris will embark on a 29-cities-in-29-days tour of bookstores. This tour should be a good warm-up for his fall tour of theatres where he will perform at 33 venues in 33 days.

Joss Whedon’s (Buffy, Firefly, Serenity) upcoming Fox TV show Dollhouse, which received a seven-episode order shortly before the strike, will debut midseason.

"Dollhouse" revolves around a group of young men and women, aka "Dolls," who are imprinted with different personalities for different assignments. They have no memories of their previous lives, until Echo (Eliza Dushku) begins to try to find out who she was.

Not really feeling any excitement for forthcoming action flicks like Batman or Indiana Jones? Well, here's one for you...

Australia is Baz Luhrmann's forthcoming romantic action-adventure. Set prior to World War II, Australia centers on an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a ranch the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle driver (Hugh Jackman) to drive 2000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country’s most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

{Late Night Sounds May Mix 08}

The Late Night Sounds Mix is no longer...well, not in the same format anyhow.

Thanks to all who listened to the monthly mixes I made (and sent me nice comments) over the years. Hopefully (at some point) I introduced you to a wonderful song you hadn't yet heard. With 'real life' increasingly taking up more time it has become difficult for me to keep splicing songs together into an mp3 file, adding links to the artists sites, and/or links to the mp3's, So the Late Night Sounds Mixes will now continue in the form of a Muxtape, thus making it far easier to manage.

The Late Night Sounds May Mix features tunes from: Langhorne Slim, I Am Kloot, Say Hi, Talking Heads, Emmy The Great, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Pacifika, Cut Copy, and Those Dancing Days...enjoy!

Chuck Palahniuk's latest book titled Snuff (due in stores tomorrow) is about a pornstar (Cassie Wright) who intends to cap off her career by breaking the world record for serial fornication. On camera. With six hundred men. Snuff unfolds from the perspectives of Mr. 72, Mr. 137, and Mr. 600, who await their turn on camera in a very crowded green room. Leave it to the guy who brought us Fight Club and Choke to bring pornography into the realm of literary fiction, as this is sure to be a wild and funny ride.

Palahniuk has put together some funny vintage-inspired porno trailers to coincide with the book. Here's a couple of clips (Note: Not appropriate for work).

{Cannes Film Festival}

Nope, we couldn't make it to this years Cannes Film Festival either, but that doesn't stop us from getting psyched about some of the films (premiering at the festival), which will make their debuts nationwide later this year.

First let's mention the official poster, which is a photograph by David Lynch, adapted by French cinema poster artist Pierre Collier. It pays tribute to the talent and works of the renowned American filmmaker. The event organizer said the poster's design conveys the same tone as director Lynch's films. David Lynch's films have been nominated four times at the Cannes Film Festival. He also won the Golden Palm award for Best Picture in 1990 (for Wild at Heart) and an award for best Director for the film Mulholland Drive in 2001.

There are just too many films to mention making their debut at the festival. Amongst those I'm looking forward to hearing about are Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, Steven Soderbergh's Che, and Clint Eastwood's Changeling. Couldn't find any trailers for those films, but here's a couple that I did find trailers for.

Fernando Meirelles' (director of City of God, The Constant Gardener) Blindness...

Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona...

{The Heavy}

I've been enjoying the new album from The Heavy titled Great Vengeance and Furious Five, whose sound is both a bit retro contemporary. On the track "Coleen" the band sound like they can rival Gnarls Barkley's best, on "That Kind of Man" they sound like Curtis Mayfield with electric guitars, and the trip-hop tune "Brukpockets Lament" finds them at their best.

The Heavy hail from Noid, a small town in South West England and their debut album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire was released on Counter Records/NinjaTune in the U.K. in October 07 and has just released in the U.S.

{This Is Ivy League}

We posted about these boys about a month ago, but back then we only gave you the first single "London Bridges". Now we introduce you to This Is Ivy League's new summer single and a cover of Arcade Fire's "Crown of Love"!

This Is Ivy League's (Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton) debut self-titled album filled with Simon & Garfunkel and Belle & Sebastian-esque pop, available now through Twentyseven Records.

Pitchfork said the album ”sustains a soft-focus weirdness, borrowing all the elements you’d expect from a postmillennial Chad & Jeremy -- blazers, bicycles, merry-go-rounds, a park in autumn-- while adding a few new flourishes-- women in animal costumes, gently evocative use of color and pattern. Alex Suarez and Ryan Blackinton croon their crisp harmonies, finishing each other’s sentences and riffs, nearly symmetrical as they perform atop their pedestals for the animal woman.”

{David Dondero}

One of pur favorite singer/songwriters David Dondero played at Spaceland in L.A. this past friday (May 2nd) and despite having guitar issues he (and his band) sounded great.

I had a drink with Dondero while Nik Freitas was on and he persuaded me to stick around and catch El Olio Wolof...and I'm glad he did! No time to write a proper review, but good performances all around, so be sure to check any of these artists out when they come to a town near you.

Hear some tunes...

Nik Freitas - "Sun Down"

El Olio Wolof - "A Fire Breathing Dragon"

Augusten Burroughs new book, A wolf at the Table hit stores this week!

His 2002 hilarious, yet heartbreaking memoir Running With Scissors touched on his mentally-ill mother who deposited him with (at age 12) with her shrink. His 2003 laugh out loud memoir Dry focused on his years as an alcoholic and getting sober.
