{The Rookie}

the_rookie.jpg

Are you fans of Fox's hit tv series 24 having withdrawls too? Then check out the new 24 spin-off The Rookie!

In these side stories rookie analyst/field agent Jason Blaine (Jeremy Valdez) is sent to Mexico City to find his mentor Alex Maxwell (Eric Beck), who has been kidnapped by drug czar Estaban Salazar (the Salazar brothers were introduced in season 3 of 24). The plot also thickens when a a mole is discovered inside the CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit), adding that familiar set up to fans of the 24 storytelling.

There's a bit too much brand advertisement (the webisodes are brought to you by Degree men's deodorant), and the acting isn't quite up to snuff, but it's still 24 right? The familiar setup is all there, the ticking clock, the framed character windows, etc.

Quarantine's viral marketing aims to replicate Cloverfield-esque hype!

After 40 seconds of amateur videocam footage posted on YouTube back in March, Sony Pictures' forthcoming film Quarantine (directed by John Dowdle) is the latest in viral marketing that aims to replicate the kind of hype that Cloverfield generated.

quarantinepic1.jpg

The story centers around tv reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter of The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and her cameraman (Steve Harris), who are covering a story about a Los Angeles Fire Station. When a 911 call takes them to an apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene responding to horrible screams coming from one of the units. They learn a woman living in the building has been infected by a mysterious source. When the residents, officers, and tv crew try to escape they learn that the CDC has quarantined the building. There is no phone, internet, television, or cell phone access and officials are not relaying information to those locked inside. Once the quarantine is finally lifted the only evidence of what took place is the news crew videotape.

Quarantine is based on the '07 Spanish import {REC} by Paco Plaza & Jaume Balaguero. Look for Quarantine in theaters nationwide on October 17th.

{From Bubblegum To Sky}

From Bubblegum To Sky.tiff

We've been a big fan of From Bubblegum To Sky's lo-fi disco indie-pop for years!

A Soft Kill is the third full-length album by the half Mexican, half Japanese one man band (Mario Hernandez) known as From Bubblegum To Sky. A Soft Kill will be considered by some to be one of the best one-man albums of the year. Hernandez’s previous records Me and Amy and the Two French Boys and Nothing Sadder Than Lonely Queen feature some pristine pop melodies, and A Soft Kill is no exception, harking back to the music he listened to before departing Japan for America at the age of 12.

From Bubblegum To Sky’s A Soft Kill will be released by Eenie Meenie Records as a digital download and vinyl LP only. The vinyl configuration will come packaged with an exclusive t-shirt designed exclusively by the Brown Sound Clothing Company, available online and in select stores. Check out the company that created this exclusive offer here. A Soft Kill will release on July 3rd.

Here's a standout track...

{Hamlet 2}

cooganshue.jpg

The red-band trailer is now online for Andrew Fleming's forthcoming comedy Hamlet 2. I had an opportunity to catch an advanced screening of the film last month, and I was pleasantly surprised that there were indeed a few good laughs to be had. The film starts slowly and resorts to all-too-familiar jokes early on, but once the musical gets underway that's when the real laughs begin.

Hamlet 2 is about an eccentric high-school-drama teacher (Steve Coogan) who enlists his Tucson, Arizona students in a politically incorrect musical sequel to William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Hamlet 2 costars: Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, David Arquette and Elisabeth Shue (as Elisabeth Shue). Look for Hamlet 2 in theaters on November 22nd.

This July Tori Amos and Image Comics release Comic Book Tattoo, a 480-page, full color anthology adapting the themes and ideas behind Tori's songs.

“I have been surprised, excited and pleasantly shocked by these comics that are extensions of the songs that I have loved and therefore welcome these amazing stories of pictures and words because they are uncompromisingly inspiring,” says Amos. “It shows you thought is a powerful formidable essence and can have a breathtaking domino effect."

To assemble Comic Book Tattoo's diverse roster of talent, Amos worked with editor Rantz Hoseley to assemble a diverse roster including: Pia Guerra, Leah Moore, John Reppion David Mack, Hope Larson, Ryan Kelly, Jonathan Hickman, Colleen Doran, Eric Canete, Ted McKeever, Jock, Anthony Johnston, Dame Darcy, Carla Speed McNeil, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Mark Buckingham, Ivan Brandon, and C. Jennifer Lynch's directs her first film in fifteen years (her only other being her debut Boxing Helena) is not your typical serial killer thriller. The film is titled Surveillance and stars: Julia Ormond, Bill Pullman, French Stewart, Michael Ironside, and Cheri Oteri (yea, Cheri Oteri).

Ormond and Pullman star as FBI agents tracking a serial killer with the help of three of his would-be victims...all of whom have wildly different stories to tell.

Warner Bros. controls the German release rights to Surveilance, where it opens this summer, so this is the overseas trailer. No word yet on wehter this will get a U.S. theatrical release. Jennifer Lynch and Kent Harper wrote the script and (her father) David Lynch executive produced.
