{Stephen Chow's CJ7}

The first teaser trailer from Stephen Chow's forthcoming film CJ7 has finally hit the web. The sci-fi comedy revolves around a poor Chinese father and his son who have their lives turned upside down by the arrival of a strange “pet”. The teaser is pretty short and doesn't explain much, but it's something. CJ7 hits theatres overseas on February 8th, no word on a stateside release date yet.

{Marqui Adora}

Marqui Adora are a rock quartet with a knack for catchy new wave inspired melodies. The band recently got in touch to inform me that they were giving all of their music away FOR FREE on their website...and much to my surprise they've got some quality material.

{The Charlatans}

The legendary Britpop band The Charlatans will offer their forthcoming single “You Cross My Path” FOR FREE!

Later, The Charlatans plan on giving away a second single and then eventually their forthcoming (as-yet-untitled) album. The Chartlatans manager Alan McGee and the band believe that the business model for selling music is moribund and that future income will largely come from ticket sales for live shows and merchandising.

McGee said he decided to give The Charlatans’ music away after they were offered a deal he considered less than satisfactory by their record company, Sanctuary. “I thought, ‘well nobody buys CDs anyway’. If you talk to a 19-year-old kid, they don’t buy CDs. In eastern Europe, nobody buys a CD – everything is digitally downloaded from the internet for nothing. I came to the conclusion, ‘Why don’t we just give it away for nothing.”

{Daft Punk}

I've had Daft Punk's forthcoming release (due stateside Dec. 4th) Alive on rotation over the weekend. The live disc was recorded at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, an 18,000-capacity sports arena in Paris, on June 14th, 2007. Alive captures Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo's first hometown show in 10 years in front of a capacity crowd of thrilled fans.

I enjoyed reading Adrian Tomine's new graphic novel Shortcomings so much that I pretty much devoured it in one short sitting. Tomine (pronounced toe-mean-ay) is most known for his Optive Nerve comics, but some of you may have also seen his work featured in The New Yorker, Details, or Esquire just to name a few publications. Tomine's art has also graced covers and posters for indie bands like The Eels and Weezer.

Read some rave reviews for Shortcomings from Jonathan Lethem and The Village Voice here, from the NY Times here, or from Paste Magazine here.

{City of Men}

Fernando Meirelles' 2003 film City of God was argueably one of the best modern day films, giving Meirelles the credibility to go on to direct the Oscar winning picture The Constant Gardener. Now, comes the spin-off to City of God titled City of Men, with Mereilles taking producing duties. Look for City of Men in theaters Jan. 18th.

{Christine Fellows}

I recently received Christine Fellows' new album Nevertheless in the mail and I've had it on constant rotation ever since. Nevertheless is an interestingly narrative album about an elderly protagonist and may appeal to fans of alt. folk (a la Joanna Newsom) or showtune inspired artists (i.e. Nellie McKay).

On an interesting side note, Fellows is married to The Weakerthans frontman John Samson.

{Thao Nguyen}

Caffeine-Headache fav Thao Nguyen is gearing up to release her sophmore album (her first for the Kill Rock Stars label) and we're excited to say the least. We've been more or less crushing on her since her '05 debut album Like The Linen (the title inspired by her high school years working at her mom's laundromat in a D.C. suburb, passing time between customers playing her guitar). We Brave Bee Stings And All will release on Jan. 29th. Have a listen...

{I'm Not There}

The trailer for Todd Haynes' forthcoming Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There has surfaced online. We catch a glimpse at all of the actors who will be portraying Dylan including: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and Ben Whishaw. I'm recommending to everyone I know to check out the 200 film Masked and Anonymous for a little Dylan inspiration. I'm Not There will open in select theaters on Nov. 21st.
