California electro folk trio Rubies are gaining quite a following in Sweden and Japan. It doesn't hurt that they have some talented friends lending a helping hand, including: Eirik Glambek-Boe (Kings of Convenience), Leslie Feist, Karl-Jonas Winqvist (Blood Music), Dan Judd (Sorcerer), Lars Skoglund (Peter, Bjorn and John), Maria Eriksson (The Concretes), and the up and coming electronic duo Studio.

There is no US release date yet for the forthcoming album titled Explode From Center, although the album should be available from Telle Records (Norway) and a single is to be released through Rallye Records (Japan) on October 18th.

{Ian Ball}

Ian Ball (one of the three frontmen for Gomez) found some time to put together a solo album titled Who Goes There. I love the new track “I Knew You Were Trouble”, which I've had on repeat all week long! I've heard a few other tracks from the album and they are alright, but this one has really got a hold on me. Who Goes There drops next Tuesday (October 30th).

{The Verve}

As an early supporter of The Verve, the band has let NME offer a copy protection-free download of their first jam session together in over 10 years, as a great way of building excitement around their return. The first 14 minutes of music they created together is labled The Thaw Sessions and is available for free on NME!

{San Serac}

I'm getting backed up on music submissions I've been recieving lately, so I'm gonna put the word out about San Serac's new album before it slips my mind.

Baltimore native San Serac is on the road to promote his new album Professional (Normals Welcome Records). His new album Professional is pure 80’s indulgence (a la Roxy Music) with some modern electro touches.

Here's the track I was asked to post...

This funky electro number is one of my favorites...

{Funny or Die}

Have you been over to Funny or Die lately? No, I didn't think so. In fact the site has lost 81% of its initial traffic four month's after airing the hilarious Landlord skit starring Ferrell and Adam McKay’s daughter Pearl. So they've called in Judd Apatow (Superfreak, Knocked Up) who has now signed on as a partner and will be contributing content to the site as well. This is a new clip. Head over to the site for more.

Give it a listen or just checkout the artists on your own...

Here's a trailer for the forthcoming film The Kite Runner, which is based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini. The story follows Amir, who returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend whose son is in trouble. There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the film (read about it here), which looks like a real tearjearker. Look for The Kite Runner in theaters Jan. 17th.

{La Blogothèque}

I get emails informing me of updates over at La Blogothèque Take Away Shows. Iv'e been meaning to post something alot sooner, but it usually slips my mind. So here's a few recently added performaces that I like. The first is Jose Gonzalez performing "Fold". The performance was filmed at a 360 degree view atop the county courthouse in West Texas. After that is Beirut performing "Nantes" while walikng down a stairway and Beirut performing "Cliquot" (featuring Edward Droste from Grizzly Bear on vocals).

{Shaolin Girl}

Here's the first Japanese teaser for Stephen Chow's Shaolin Girl, which judging from the teaser it looks as though this should have been titled Shaolin Lacrosse! Shaolin Girl is the officially sanctioned follow up to Shaolin Soccer, though obviously not a direct sequel. The film is a full Japanese production with Chow on board as a producer and lead character. No word on an official US release date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

There's now a trailer online for Doug Liman's forthcoming film Jumper. The film is based on the Steven Gould novel and follows a young man (Hayden Christensen) who discovers that he has the ability to teleport. The story revolves around the boy's quest for the man he believes is responsible for the death of his mother. You may be familiar with Doug Liman's action films such as The Bourne Identity or Mr and Mrs Smith, but I'm a huge fan of his comedies like Go and Swingers. No offical release date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

{Tin Man}

The Sci-Fi Channel is doing a new take on The Wizard of Oz? I know, I know this doesn't exactly sound like the best idea in the world, but checkout the trailer and see for yourself how this could be interesting. The six-hour miniseries stars Zooey Deschanel, Richard Dreyfuss, Alan Cumming, and Neal McDonough. The Tin Man is slated for a December 2007 premiere.

Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities (formerly known as Skeletons And The Girl-Faced Boys) new album titled Lucas (from Ghostly International) is an ambitious concept album revolving around a beauty obsessed king and hair??? The trailer for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, based on the hit Broadway musical, is now online. The story follows Sweeney Todd (a.k.a Benjamin Barker) who returns to London after being sent away by Judge Turpin and opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pie Shop were she sells "the worst pies in London." With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Todd tries to rid of all the people who have ever done him wrong and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Joanna, who is now Judge Turpin's ward. Depp is joined by Helena Bonham Carter and Borat's Sacha Baron Cohen. The film hits theatres in December.

{The Real Tuesday Weld}

I've had The Real Tuesday Weld’s new album The London Book of The Dead on regular rotation lately. The Real Tuesday Weld's (aka Stephen Coates) music has been described as “Serge Gainsbourg and Cole Porter on Absinthe creating an old-fashioned radio play.”

The first thing you notice about any album by The Real Tuesday Weld is that the compositions seems to be drawn from vintage sounds complete with hissing vinyl, but with the addition of samples, loops, and glitchy beats to create a signature sound he calls "antique beat" to create something completely new.

Don't take my word for it, have a listen...

No trailers yet folks. This barely went into pre-production, but if you saw the CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that released earlier this year, then you're already familiar with the work that Imagi Animation Studios does. All we have right now is this incredibly detailed poster! Warner Brothers and The Weinstein Company will distribute the film and are aiming for release sometime in 2009.

Astroboy tells the story of a powerful robot boy created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he lost. Our hero journeys to find acceptance in the human world and ultimately discovers true friendship as he uses his incredible powers to help others and save Metro City from destruction.

The Astroboy CGI film is being directed by Colin Brady. When we know more so will you.

Ahh! Morrissey cancelled his concerts for tonight and thursday night of his 10-night stay at The Palladium in L.A.

I recently tracked down a setlist from his Santa Barbara show last weekend (which included classics like: "Tomorrow", "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself", "Sister I'm A Poet", "The Loop", "Stop Me", "Stretch Out and Wait") and I got incredibly excited that I will be seeing him on friday night! I'm gonna go ahead and keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't cancel that gig too.

{There's Only One Sun}

Wong Kar Wai's Lust, Caution premeires in select theaters this coming week, but Philips has commissioned (and is hosting) a short film from the director as part of their new website for their Ambilight televisions. There’s Only One Sun stars Amelie Daure as a secret agent who is blinded in order to protect another's identity. The cinematography by Phillippe Le Sourd is a futuristic neon canvas that looks straight out of Wong Kar Wai's last film 2046. As with most of his films the story explores themes of unrequited longing. The best example of this theme can be found in Wong Kar Wai's 2000 masterpiece In The Mood For Love. Also on the website is a free download of the orchestral music used in the film, which you may also recognize from 2046.

I caught an amazing performance from DeVotchka at The Swerve Festival this past sunday. You may already be familiar with their music from the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack, and if you have never seen the four-piece (three of whom play two instruments) perform live I highly suggest you do so! The Swerve Festival took place at Lawnsdale Park in L.A. and aside from live music and feature films the fest also featured artwork, video game consoles, and some pretty neat listening trees!
