It could partly be due to the fact that I haven't listened to a whole lotta jazz lately, but Wynton Marsalis' new album From the Plantation to the Penitentiary just sounds incredibly fresh to my ears. Spurred on by the war in Iraq, the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina (which ravaged his hometown of New Orleans), and what he views as a gluttonous, vapid, misogynist and deeply racist American culture. is From the Plantation to the Penitentiary is an instant classic Blue Note record and that's been on my constant rotation for the last couple of weeks.
