Lots of good movies on display at the Newport Beach Film Festival, which kicks off this thursday (April 19th - 29th). Here's some interesting films I was able to find trailers for...enjoy.

The Waitress Trailer

This is the story of one woman trapped in a life from which she dreams of escape. Jenna has a gift for making unusual pies whose recipes are inspired by the trials, tribulations and circumstances of her life. Her secret ambition is to save enough money from her waitressing job to leave her overbearing husband. The film stars Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jeremy Sisto (Six Feet Under), and Andy Griffith. This was the final work of the late writer, director, and actress Adrienne Shelly. The real news though is that Nathan Fillion (AKA Captain Malcolm Reynolds of the Firefly class spaceship "Serenity") will be at the premiere on Saturday, April 21st! So, all you Browncoats be sure to head out.

Eagle Vs Shark Full Trailer

two socially awkward misfits and the strange ways they try to find love; through revenge on high-school bullies, burgers, and video games.

Paprika Trailer

Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless "dream detective," code named PAPRIKA, who can enter into people's dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis.

Big Dreams Little Tokyo Trailer

The story of Boyd, an American with an uncanny ability to speak Japanese. Boyd aspires to succeed in the world of Japanese business but finds himself mostly on the outside looking in. Meanwhile, his roommate Jerome, is a Japanese American who has always felt too American to be Japanese but too Japanese to be American. He aspires to be a sumo wrestler but finds his weight and blood pressure are thwarting his dreams. Together they struggle to find their place in a world where cultural identity is seldom what it seems.

Dante's Inferno Trailer

Using paper puppets and sets, Dante's Inferno is a satirical update of the classic tour of Hell. It's venue is the familiar places of modern civilization: mini malls, airports, gated communities, used car lots, and the U.S. capitol. The ancient Roman poet Virgil (voiced by James Cromwell) guides our hapless Dante (voiced by Dermot Mulroney) through the nine circles of the underworld. Much like an animated graphic novel, the film follows the hapless slacker Dante as he accompanies Virgil into the depths of the Inferno, encountering various popes, princes, presidents, and pimps along the way.

The Restless Trailer

The Restless is a neat looking Koren fantasy action movie.

He Was A Quiet Man Teaser

Bob Maconel is about to have a bad day. Another eight hours of sitting in a dull grey cubicle, ignored by his co-workers, existing in a world where he feels completely out of sync. On this particular bad day Bob crosses the line from potential killer to inadvertent hero. This film stars Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert, and William H. Macy.

Death Note Trailer

Death Note is a Japanese manga series that centers around a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it.

Always - Sunset on Third Street Trailer

Sorry no subtitles, so I'm not really sure what's going on here, but this gorgeous period piece of 1950's Japan has a Frank Capra feel, plus it's the winner of 13 of Japan's 14 Academy Awards!

For a complete list of all the films see the Newport Beach Film Festival site.
