{Patty Griffin}

I'm looking foreward to Patty Griffin's forthcoming album Children Running Through (releasing on Feb. 7th). Today seemed like the perfect gloomy day to put her somber classic 1000 Kisses album on regular rotation.

Here's a couple of the sweetest/saddest moments ...

French director Luc Besson (Le Femme Nikita, The Professional, The Fifth Element) once claimed he would only make 10 films before retiring from the director's chair. Angel-A clocks in at number nine. Besson breaks new ground in his filmmaking with Angel-A, a movie about a small-time hood (Jamel Debbouze) about to end his life when he finds a beautiful, but supernatural woman (Rie Rasmussen) to accompany him on his exploits.

Sony Pictures Classics has just acquired the domestic rights to Angel-A the drama, which has already released in much of Europe.

Hint Hint: The hyphen in the title of Angel-A is to assist those to realize the name Angela contains the word angel.

{This American Life The Television Show}

Sundance Channel Festival Dailies has posted an exclusive look at This American Life The Television Show. Whitney Cummings talks with Ira Glass, Christopher Wilcha and Adam Beckman about the NPR program-turned Showtime series.

Each episode will be hosted by Ira Glass and will explore a single theme or topic through the unique juxtaposition of first-person storytelling and whimsical narrative, allowing for the show’s distinct and original voice. The visual interpretation of the radio series will reflect the structure and spirit of the radio show that has grown to be one of the most popular and innovative programs in the medium.

The first episode is scheduled to premiere on March 22, 2007 on Showtime...should be interesting.

The sophomore album from the British quartet Bloc Party (titled Weekend in the City) will release on February 6th. The album sets out to capture daily life in a modern city (as noted by frontman Kele Okereke). I think they've done a remarkable job of capturing all the beauty and chaos, but judge for yourself.

I don't mention gangsta rap nearly enough! This may in fact be the first time, however last week saw the release of The Best of N.W.A: The Strength of Street Knowledge and I feel compelled to mention it. I mean, everyone owned the album the Straight Outta Compton at some point, right? I was in middle school when I purchased my vinyl copy, which my mom subsequently found and burned in the fireplace. The Best of N.W.A scatters the Compton tracks throughout the collection making the whole thing flow with a running order that feels right. Here's a taste...

{The Host}

This Korean film is yet another to add to our Favorite Films of 2006. The Host seems very much like a homage back to the good ol' days of giant monsters (such as Godzilla).

Plot Outline: As a giant reptillian monster starts chowing down on people in the park, the goverment responds by quarantining the entire area. When the creature snatches up a teenager, a father must not only contend with the monster, but also the goverment. Action and character development make this one more than your typical B-movie fare.

Lots of new (possibly good, but maybe not) films released on DVD today, here's the rundown...

{The Illusionist}

Neil Burger's thriller centers on an illusionist (Edward Norton) who falls for an aristocrat (Jessica Biel) well above his social standing. When the Crown Prince (Rufus Sewell) emloys the Chief Inspector (Paul Giamatti) to unveil him as a fraud the real mystery begins.

{Time To Leave}

Here's another one to add to my soon-to-post Favorite Films of '06 list...

Directed by Francois Ozon this is a story of a handsome photographer that learns he has a malignant brain tumor that will soon kill him. Hiding his diagnosis, he alienates his family and his boyfriend, but during a short stay with his grandmother, his vulnerability is met with a big heart and sound advice. An encounter with a waitress results in an unusual bargain that provides a happy, playful dimension to the proceedings. Time To Leave originally released overseas in '05, and then in limited release stateside last summer. You can now find it through Netflix or Blockbuster.

There are a wide range of stories featured by familiar names like David Sedaris and Joathan Goldstein. This one however, is one of my absolute favorites. This is why this is one of the best (if not thee) radio shows around. Grab a kleenex and have a listen...
