{Fast Food Nation}

This is Richard Linklater's (director of Before Sunset, Berfore Sunrise, Waking Life, Dazed & Confused, A Scanner Darkly) fictionalized adaptation of Eric Schlosser's best-selling non-fiction book, Fast Food Nation. The cast includes: Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Luis Guzman, Greg Kinnear, Bruce Willis, Avril Lavigne, Esai Morales, Wilmer Valderrama and others. Fast Food Nation hits theatres on October 20th.

Don Henderson - a corporate executive at Mickey's Fast Food Restaurant chain, home of "The Big One" - has a problem. Contaminated meat is getting into the frozen patties of the company's best-selling burger, and he needs to find out why. Discovering the answer won't be as simple or as clean as he had hoped. Embarking on a journey to the dark side of the All-American meal, he leaves the cushy confines of the company's Southern California boardroom for the immigrant-staffed slaughterhouses, teeming feedlots and cookie cutter strip malls of Middle America. What Don discovers is that this "Fast Food Nation" is a country of consumers... who haven't realized it is they who have been consumed by an industry with a seemingly endless appetite for bodies, human and otherwise.

After reading Schlosser's book I couldn't bring myself to eat meat for an entire summer. The book examines how the dominance of fast food (and the industry which supports it) have led to changes in American society. In particular, Schlosser argues that the fast food industry has used political influence to increase profits at the expense of human health and the social conditions of its workers.
