{Revenge of The Bookeaters Benefit}

I would've been at Sunset Junction last saturday, but I just so happen to have killer seats for The Return of The Bookeaters Benefit Tour at the lovely UCLA Royce Hall. Recap:

Andy Richter hosted the event and performed some hilarious skits in between sets.

The Mountain Goats kicked off the night, in what was intended to be a quiet show but decided to launch into (a crowd pleaser) "This Year", in which John Darnielle stated "I'm going to scream at you now".

Dave Eggers showed a video, pleaded for donations, and then shelled out hugs for $20 donations.

Jenny Lewis performed a few songs off Rabbit Fur Coat and invited Jonathan Rice out for a new tune.

Sarah Vowell read a funny new story.

Jake Gyllenhall couldn't make it, but The Office's John Krasinski stepped in to read a hilarious new story by one of the kids who frequent the 826 program.

Aimee Mann performed a handful of some of her best songs. This was easily the highlight of my night, so decided to beat the crowd and end the evening on that note.

The Mountain Goats, Jenny Lewis, and Jonathan Rice returned to sing a Hank Williams tune as I was leaving.

I posted a few Mp3's awhile back...go here.

About the 826 Program:

826 is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, 826 provides drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

With only two employees on the payroll in Los Angeles the program relies on tutors to volunteer their time (as little or as often) as you can.

If you are unable to get away from your busy schedule, please donate whatever you can spare.
