{Rocky Votolato}

410OBDD4sQL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

I recently got an advance copy of Seattle musician Rocky Votolato's forthcoming album True Devotion (out February 23rd on Barsuk Records). I really like the first half of this album. The first track in particular. This is a ballad and therere's this wonderful line he delivers towards the end of the song where he sings "I only wanna walk the way you showed me". It might not sound like anything special, but in the context of the song it's subtle greatness.

Anyone who pre-orders the record before the release date will get immediate exclusive digital access to the album plus a bonus 7" single with two non-album tracks (while supplies last). The bonus 7″ single includes the two non-album tracks “Rushing To The Ending” (with James Bowman of Against Me! on guitar) and “Connections”, both featuring label-mate David Bazan on drums. You will also be entered automatically to win a private house show performance by Votolato.

I'm obsessed with this first song on the album...

"Lucky Clover Coin"

Also, I received this one to post...

"Red River"

Here's the video for (one of my favs of his) "White Daisy Tripping"...

{Kick Ass}

kick-ass_hit_girl_poster.jpg

Kick-Ass (based on the comic of the same name) is about a teenage boy that decides to become a real-life superhero after being inspired by the heroes of comic books. Along the way he meets a crime fighting 12 year old girl named Hit Girl. Awhile back a Red Band Trailer highlighting Hit Girl's ruthless talent appeared online. Now there's a New Red Band International Trailer.

Look for Kick Ass in select theaters April 16th.

{Criterion Collection Sale for Out-of-Print Classics}

421_pierre.jpg

Criterion Collection has just announced that they are about to lose the rights to 23 titles from StudioCanal at the end of March. "The titles are going to Lionsgate, and we don't know when they may be rereleased. As ever, we will continue to try to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future".

The titles: Jean Luc Godard's Alphaville, Carlos Saura's Flamenco Trilogy, Henri-Georges Clouzot's Le corbeau, Coup de torchon, Diary of a Country Priest, The Fallen Idol, Forbidden Games, Gervaise, Grand Illusion, Le jour se leve, Last Holiday, Mayerling, The Orphic Trilogy, Peeping Tom, Pierrot le fou, Port of Shadows, Quai des Orfevres, The Small Back Room, The Tales of Hoffmann, Trafic, Le trou, Variety Lights, and The White Sheik.

Until they're out of stock, each of these films will be an additional $5 off. That means you can get a Jean Luc Godard (soon to out-of-print) classic for only $13.96!

{Two Door Cinema Club}

I recently received Irish trio Two Door Cinema Club's forthcoming album Tourist History in my inbox. The indie-rock band incorporate electronica and dance into their sound (think Phoenix or early Bloc Party). The album will release stateside March 1st via Rough Trade.

Here's a couple of my fav songs off the album...

"Do You Want It All"

"You're Not Stubborn"

{Gil Scott-Heron}

gilscott-heron.jpg

Street poet/singer Gil Scott-Heron’s new album, his first in over a decade and a half, titled I'm New Here is a mix of spoken word with bluesy, jazzy trip-hop tinged rhythms.

The song, which is also the album’s title, I’m New Here, is from Smog’s outstanding A River Ain’t Too Much To Love, where Smog aka Bill Callahan is told by a woman at a bar that he has “an ego the size of Texas.” And he asks her, "I’m new here, and I forget, does that mean big or small?"

The musical pioneer behind The Revolution Will Not Be Televised even has a little Kanye in the backround of his story of his struggles growing up "On Coming From A Broken Home".

{Boy}

Picture-45-450x207.png

Boy is the new film from New Zealand comedian/filmmaker Taika Waititi, better known as Taika Cohen (director of Eagle vs Shark and episodes of Flight of the Conchords). I heard this film got a warm reception when it premiered at the Sundance Film Fest.

The story begins when a father returns after many years away and 11-year-old Boy (James Rolleston) and his little brother Rocky (Te Aho Aho Eketone-Whitu) must reconcile reality with a fantasy dad they created in their minds.

I recently picked up Hot Chip's new album One Life Stand and I've had it on constant rotation ever since.

I don't really know how to classify this album, electro/disco/pop perhaps? I just call it good music.

This song is my immediate fav off the album...
